Bike Pedals for Cyclists with Fused Ankles

post-image

Modern day bicycles are not designed for cyclists who may suffer from fused ankles. This leaves many cyclists unable to continue their passion for riding. My idea is to design a clipless bike pedal, tailored for individuals with surgically fused ankle joints (ankle arthrodesis). The design will involve repositioning the clipless pedal cleat from the to the ball of the foot, to the arch, therefore reducing the strain on the ankle joint. I would love some help from designers with involvement in the riding community. Any feedback or suggestions would be very helpful and appreciated.

This is a great idea Hayden! Take a look at the UNSW Assistive tech hub as they did an interesting project with the Balmain rowing club to make rowing more accessible for members with disabilities. It may inspire you with your project! https://www.challeng.unsw.edu.au/assistive-tech-hub

Congratulations Hayden on your fantastic efforts with your MDP, it has been great to be part of your design journey this year.

Good luck with the submission of your project and adding any finishing touches this week, I am sure you will do great. We would love to see a final image of your design if you get a chance to update your post. Very curious to see how it all turned out.  We hope that you have learned a lot from being part of this year's UpRising and are excited to take your creativity and design thinking into the next steps in life, (which is exactly what business and industry are looking for). Teachers, thank you for helping your students make the leap across the gap, from classroom to industry.

Business leaders, likewise it has been fantastic to connect with you, thank you for all of the support you have given to these young designers and helping to grow the innovation ecosystem in NSW. Breaking down the silos, together.

If you could complete this quick survey that would be greatly appreciated, teachers and business/community also welcome to fill in and provide valuable feedback.

Thank you
