Coral Bleaching Awareness Campaign Through Fashion Design

post-image
My design and technology major project for 2024 is a textiles-based coral bleaching awareness campaign to promote the effects of bleaching on our coral ecosystems. I aim to use the beauty of textiles with the incorporation of LED lights to convey the true beauty of our coral reefs and establish an impactful campaign. I aim to incorporate a divide, separation or shift within the design to truly reflect the difference between alive and bleached coral.  If anyone can provide support in textiles, wearable tech, awareness campaigns or fashion design, your input would be greatly appreciated!

A great idea Emily

Such a critical issue. A few quick links, reach out to Sara Cole, at https://urbanmoments.org . She is based near the Great Barrier Reef.

Don't forget to check the amazing library of circle economy materials that the legendary Liam Gibson has put together. Click on UpRising's Shop Tab for more information or just jump straight in,  https://www.uprisingdesigners.org/shop

The Australian Circle Hub is also an amazing place to connect with people working in that industry, Chelsea would be more than happy to help you out, https://acehub.org.au/

Great project, hope this helps.

what a fabulous concept. Have you considered using textiles that have been recycled and need a new home into the design. https://texrecaus.com/

You could also link to the Upparel project https://upparel.com.au/

you could also tie this to one of the Great Barrier Reef foundations where a percentage of the design could be donated back to help the coral reefs.

I look forward to hearing more

Hi Emily

You got a great concept! I love it.

Maybe you can try to dye the fabric with gradient colour, such as from blue to white, which represents the gradual bleaching of a coral

Hope this helps.

Hi NJ Kelton,
Thank you so much for your insight and ideas. I will definitely look into taking on your feedback and incorporating recycled materials into my design. This would be a great addition as textile waste is a leading contributor to climate and therefore a contributor to the destruction and bleaching of the world’s coral reefs.
How would you suggest I tie this into the Great Barrier Reef Foundation?

emily0401 @ 2024.03.26 5:27 AM
Hi Lydia, your comment and feedback have inspired me to incorporate dyeing fabric to create a more significant and impactful gradient. Thank you for your suggestion!

Hi uprising, I am wondering if anyone would have any insight or suggestions with the use of wearable tech in particular optic fibre within a textile garment.

NJ Kelton @ 2024.04.02 5:21 AM
I think you need to tie in the recycled materials in to the overarching 'sustainability' aspect of the project

Hi there Emily, congratulations, you are nearly there, hope all is going well.

We are sending out a little request - if you could update the image on your Post to show a little collage of your projects development that would be fantastic. We will be awarding the top three UpRising design projects for 2024 and the UpRising alliance and community love to see the journey of your design.

There is a little feedback survey, if you could fill it in that would fantastic as it really helps us to understand how we can better help next years design students.

It also has an option for you to select if you would like to continue to be involved in UpRising next year and beyond. Lots of interesting ways to continue to build connections within the design industry. Great for your resume and career paths.

Wishing you all the best with your trials and finishing touches on your MDP.

Shout out if we can help in any way.
