Escaping Fires Safely

post-image

Australia is a country constantly on fire.

At the moment, there is no good way for a person in a rural environment to survive and escape a fire without injury. Therefore, I propose the 'Emergency Fireproof Poncho'. The base layer is a fire-retardant material, and the topcoat is a reflective material designed to reflect the heat. The Poncho is also equipped with a respirator and visor of sorts which allows the user to breath unobstructed and see through the smoke. Once the user has escaped the fire, a whistle is attached to signal authorities. With this, they survive unscathed.

What do you think?

A great concept Jackson. I can not believe something like this does not exist already. The respirator, visor and whistle are clever editions. How can we help? Have you contacted SES. They would be an interesting group to talk too about fire safety education etc..

Looking forward to seeing this project evolve.

Wonderful idea, incorporation of a small oxygen bottle would be cool.

Hi Jackson,

I think it's a great idea to have a personal fire safety device, especially seeing as in rural communities, it can take significantly longer for emergency services to both reach and find properties in the event of a fire. I have a few suggestions and comments about the design that you proposed.

I appreciate the addition of the mask and visor for the device, as the smoke produced by the fire is often the most deadly aspect for people, as the smoke can both blind you if it gets in your eyes, and suffocate from smoke inhalation. I think the design would work better if the mask and visor were integrated into the poncho as a whole piece so that there is less chance of losing individual pieces of the device and it would be faster to put on in a stressful situation.

Another recommendation is adding a light in addition to the whistle to signal emergency service and attract others to one's position, much like the life preservers on planes. This would help in attracting attention at night, in the event of significant smoke or cloud cover, and if the wearer is unable to blow the whistle. It would also make it so that the wearer would not need to remove the mask to blow the whistle as often.

I think your idea has the potential to be an integral part of saving people's life, with fire being as wide spend as they are in Australia.

Regards,

WillH

Hi Jackson, that is an awesome idea.

Have you thought about incorporating a full-face respirator instead of a visor since smoke can enter the eyes with just a visor? Also with the whistle can it be an electronic/duress alarm with a tracker which can be triggered by a small push button if the fire victim is incapacitated and unable to blow a whistle?

Hi there Jackson, congratulations, you are nearly there, hope all is going well.

We are sending out a little request - if you could update the image on your Post to show a little collage of your projects development that would be fantastic. We will be awarding the top three UpRising design projects for 2024 and the UpRising alliance and community love to see the journey of your design.

There is a little feedback survey, if you could fill it in that would fantastic as it really helps us to understand how we can better help next years design students.
