Food distribution system

post-image
Rising costs of living and the lack of financial resources have put millions of Australians at risk of experiencing food insecurity within the last year. My motivation for my MDP is to create a food distribution system that targets low-income or homeless Australians by providing access to free meals. I hope to achieve this by upcycling old Australia Post boxes into mobile food storage units. These units will hold non-perishable food items that can be accessed shame free via individualised codes. It will distribute meals to those in need through a simple operating system that doesn't rely on human integrity.

What do you think?

Brilliant idea GDewar. Love the up cycle of old postal letter boxes and shame free elements that you have considered. Wondering if you could incorporate something like the Street Library drop off / swap into your system?

Let us know what else we can do to help.

Hi GDewar,

What a wonderful idea! Were you inspired by OzHarvest? I've just finished reading OzHarvest Founder Ronni Kahn's biography and it is one of the best books I have ever read!

There are some fantastic tools for exploring systems and learning how to think in systems on Leyla Acaroglu's Unschool website here: https://online.unschools.co/courses/systems-thinking

Systems thinking is about thinking through all of the interconnected and flow-on effects of an activity rather than viewing things as if they exist in isolation (linear thinking). Could your system create any unintended consequences, for example?

Systems mapping is a tool for visually thinking through the complex interconnected elements that exist within a system. Leyla explains how to do systems mapping on her website and I'm happy to help you with this if you'd like to try it.

Warm regards,

Chelsea McLean, Circular Economy Pioneers

Congratulations GDewr on your fantastic efforts with your MDP, it has been great to be part of your design journey this year. We would love to see an image of your final design if you get a chance to drop it in as an update.

Good luck with the submission of your project and adding any finishing touches this week, I am sure you will do great. We hope that you have learned a lot from being part of this year's UpRising and are excited to take your creativity and design thinking into the next steps in life, (which is exactly what business and industry are looking for.) Teachers, thank you for helping your students make the leap across the gap, from classroom to industry. Business leaders, likewise it has been fantastic to connect with you, thank you for all of the support you have given to these young designers and helping to grow the innovation ecosystem in NSW. Breaking down the silos, together.

If you could complete this quick survey that would be greatly appreciated, teachers and business/community also welcome to fill in and provide valuable feedback.

Thank you.
