Great concept Amilie. Cardboard is such a versatile material to use. Great post, with a really clear 'ask'.
Thinking there must be a range of recycled paper products out there that have been upgraded and processed to increase durability.
Have you considered adding in modular options so that more pieces can be added to it.
Looking forward to seeing project development.
This is a really interesting concept, and a solution that is sorely needed - well done!
There could be an interesting opportunity to look at how to manufacture these from cardboard - maybe even developing templates that allow the users to make the pieces themselves from scrap?
The material durability is certainly a challenge - maybe it could be worthwhile looking into what other materials are readily discarded in a similar manner to cardboard that may be a little more waterproof and hardy. Plastic corrugated signage boards might fit well - and would work nicely to extend their useful life too!
I happen to work in the tents and shelter industry, so if you have any questions I'd be more than happy to help where I can!
In Queensland, with the frequency of the rain, it may be a good idea to run with a lightweight, recycled, composite plastic to maintain your sustainability & ease of use within your approach.
Could you incorporate some form of anchorage such as a ground-pegging system to mitigate wind-effects?
Amelie, this is a great concept that could have a huge impact on people struggling to find a secure place within our communities.
Have you considered looking into recycled plastics and composites? They would provide increased durability, protection against the elements and would hold together better when transporting.
Awesome idea Amelie!
Homelessness is a pressing issue and you have proposed an innovative solution
to address it. The use of cheap and sustainable materials to create a portable
homeless shelter is a commendable idea, as it not only addresses the issue of
protection from the elements but having an 'Origami' type design that can
easily be folded and moved as needed.
One area that could be addressed is the durability of the material. Cardboard is not known for its durability, especially in adverse weather conditions. It would be helpful to explore ways to increase the durability of the material, such as adding water-resistant coatings or using thicker, more durable cardboard. One possible solution could be to explore different plastic films to coat the outside of the cardboard structure. On such film could be EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) film. This is a flexible and waterproof material that is often used in packaging and outdoor products. It is also UV resistant and has good thermal insulation properties.
Overall, I think your idea and design sketches are brilliant and innovative. If you are able to come up with a cost-effective solution to increase the durability of the shelter, then I think you will have created a truly impressive and impactful solution to address the issue of homelessness. Your use of sustainable materials and flexible design approach show great promise in creating a solution that can be easily implemented and adapted to different situations. Keep up the good work and continue to explore different options to improve the durability of the shelter, as this will be a key factor in making it a practical and effective solution for those in need.
Hi @UpRising,
Thanks so much for your response. I'll definitely be looking into alternate materials that could be potentially be implemented within my design to improve its durability. Modular design had not been considered greatly earlier within my design process, but is definitely something that I will take into consideration to help with its further development. Thanks again for you time.
Hi @Kilian_Frunz, Creating templates could be a great addition to consider for my project, thanks for this idea. I have definitely thought about potentially changing to a more waterproof material as this would increase its durability greatly; recycled plastic sign board could be something to consider.
I will definitely keep all this in mind and reach out if any other questions arise. Thanks
Hi @Rooster, Thanks for your response and insight. Understanding all different conditions is an important aspect in-order to create the most suitable design, so thanks for this insight from Queensland. An anchorage system could be a great implementation in-order to improve its stability. Thanks for this idea, I will definitely consider this.
Hi @Hayden Richardson, Thanks for your response! I haven't yet looked deeply into recycled plastics and composites, but is something that I'm interested in looking into further. This could be a great implementation into my project. Thanks again
Good morning UpRising. Congratulations on the development of your project. As one of this year's UpRising students, you have been invited to
UpRising @ Stone&Chalk - Program X - Tickets are open now.
Click here to get your ticket. https://events.humanitix.com/uprising-stone-and-chalk
Our big event for this year, UpRising@Stone&Chalk, July 14th Friday 10am to 2pm, and you get first dibs. This will be in the second week of the school holidays. It doesn't mess up your school time and makes it as easy as possible for you to get there. In a cool building, in an amazing place, in the heart of innovation in NSW.
There is a limit of 50 attendees, with the first invitations going to you, the
UpRising students of 2023. If there are any spaces left by the end of this
week, we will create a second round of invitations that you can pass onto a
classmate from your design class. Please complete this survey if you haven't
already to help us know exactly what you want to get from this opportunity.
Teachers are most welcome to the event as well.
Congratulations Amelie on your fantastic efforts with your MDP, it has been great to be part of your design journey this year.
We would love to see an image of your final design if you get a chance to drop one in as an update of your post. Good luck with the submission of your project and adding any finishing touches this week, I am sure you will do great.
We hope that you have learned a lot from being part of this year's UpRising and are excited to take your creativity and design thinking into the next steps in life, (which is exactly what business and industry are looking for.) Teachers, thank you for helping your students make the leap across the gap, from classroom to industry.
Business leaders, likewise it has been fantastic to connect with you, thank you for all of the support you have given to these young designers and helping to grow the innovation ecosystem in NSW. Breaking down the silos, together.
If you could complete this quick survey that would be greatly appreciated, teachers and business/community also welcome to fill in and provide valuable feedback.
