School Wellbeing Room

post-image

I aim to design a ‘Wellbeing Room’ system which will be implemented into both primary schools and high schools across NSW. The purpose of this room is to help students who struggle with different issues such as poor mental health gain access to both support from professionals and a quiet and calming safe place at school. My MDP will also include tools to be implemented in the Wellbeing Room such as communication assistance cards for students feeling extremely anxious, sensory items and mindfulness devices. I am keen to gain advice and suggestions from any professionals willing to help. Thank you!

A fantastic idea Saskia. Such an important issue to raise awareness on and provide solutions.

A lot of great things happening with Wellbeing in schools and some work places that you can tap into and explore.

Hi Saskia!

What an interesting idea - I think maybe you could iron out a few details by honing in on a specific purpose for the room. Is it for people who are anxious while taking exams, people who need a safe space to express their emotions, or people who are looking for support from a counselor/psychologist? I think if you narrow down the purpose you can create a space that more effectively meets people's needs without jeopardising others. For example, when I was in school and feeling unwell mentally, I did not want teachers hanging around, so I wouldn't want to enter this space - but it could be great for those specifically seeking support.

Hi Saskia,

I really like this idea! I would have loved it as a young person, and as an adult, have been experimenting with various mental health strategies to get me on track and keep me on track when i am out of whack. I love the idea of couches, a quiet space, privacy, as well as comfort couches, communication cards, etc, as these would be beneficial. Have you thought about adding things like play-do, balls, art therapy, a punching bag or various tools to help students connect back to themselves. I personally like art, journaling and talking out loud, running, walking and breath work, or speaking out loud in a sound proof room.

I hope it goes well for you, and this idea comes to fruition, as this is a necessity in our school system,

All the best,

Monique

@morganctei Thank you for your advice! I think I will design the room specifically for those who need support from a counselor or psychologist and ensure the room caters to these needs. I will also investigate how I can ensure privacy for users and the role of teachers in relation to the room. Thank you again.

@MoniqueDeMartin I had been considering different tools and activities that could be accessible for users of the wellbeing room so thank you so much for your suggestions and examples you find useful. I will also definitely try to include sound proof solutions into the room to create a private environment for students in the room. Thank you!

Hi there Saskia, congratulations, you are nearly there, hope all is going well.

We are sending out a little request - if you could update the image on your Post to show a little collage of your projects development that would be fantastic. We will be awarding the top three UpRising design projects for 2024 and the UpRising alliance and community love to see the journey of your design.

There is a little feedback survey, if you could fill it in that would fantastic as it really helps us to understand how we can better help next years design students.
