Up-cycling

post-image
My idea for my major work stems from my big passion for fashion and sustainability. Through research and my own experience in sewing garments, there are often too many leftover offcuts of odd sizes that would either end up in a pile or landfill. Therefore, my aim is to reduce waste through the concept of up-cycling by utilising leftover fabric offcuts and old garments as my main materials to create beautiful and creative wearable clothing. In my designs, I aim to focus on exploring techniques using offcuts that are different from patchwork. I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

What do you think?

Fantastic idea Ava

There is a massive opportunity to reduce the amount of land fill that the fashion industry contributes to.

Do you have a particular company you are working with to collect offcuts from?

And do you have a particular target market that you are aiming to design for?

Looking forward to seeing your project take shape.

Great idea! There is increasing demand in the fashion industry for more sustainable and circular production processes. I would like to hear in more detail about what techniques you will be exploring with this, eg different fabric manipulations such as combining offcuts together to create patchwork fabric pieces to cut garments from or the offcuts as patchwork/ appliqué on existing garments?

Great job Ava

I love to reuse the offcut fabric and give them a new life. This was what I did in my Grad show pieces too.

Looking forward to seeing your creative technique in your final pieces.

The design idea is great! It focuses on using left over offcuts and scraps of material to reduce waste, which I know can be a lot as I sew garments myself. Your idea is very well based on sustainability, which is great as many consumers love sustainable products, however an idea could be focusing on the scalability of the design. For example, if some offcuts are too small to incorporate into clothing, you could turn them into hair scrunchies or head bands. Also, smaller offcuts could be turned into patch work bags, pillowcases or even blankets.
