Wearable Pregnancy and Postpartum Compression

post-image

Impacts of birth-related trauma are far-reaching but yet, not prioritised/discussed in clinical or social settings.

The Australian Birth Trauma Association reveals ongoing birth pain across 50% of respondents, and 85% reporting subsequent mental health impacts. In the current epidemic of body dissatisfaction, there's a specific need as over 50% of mothers report somewhat to extreme unhappiness with postpartum bodies. I'm proposing to make a wearable compression device (girdle, belly-band etc.) that also combines other aspects of nursing products/undergarments, and uplifts body confidence.

I’m searching for specialist advice or suggestions on how to achieve my pursuit of a medical-grade end product.

What do you think?

A fantastic project idea Emelia. The combination of an awareness champaign embedded into a product for such an important issue is a great project.

Would you be able to elaborate on the specifications of what you need to get it to 'medical grade'?

Looking forward to seeing this develop.

@Uprising A major concern for a medical rehabilitation product is the safety of the user. I have to ensure the compression levels (mmHg) exerted on the body are at a safe and comfortable level, not causing discomfort, circulation issues etc. For example, over-the-counter garments of light-medium compression fall between 8-20mmHg, however the typical range for pregnancy garments (20-30mmHg) require medical prescription. I'm searching for ways to overcome this; possibly ways to make the compression adjustable, specific fabrics to use, or methods to measure compression (the information and availability of current methods/technology is unclear).

hi hi I have developed an interlock stretch textiles that might be helpful as it has great strength but more of a pull on belt? Its the worlds first eco stretch for activewear etc with Tencel Modal and Roica V550 that is the worlds first C2C gold standard but has the Hohenstein Institute certification showing its non toxic as it breaks down, and use C2C or Bluesign dyes. You dont want the plastic toxic chemicals in a product if you can :)

Its 280gsm production however is 1000kg minimums but Im trying to get this supported via several designers through STSC Club.

Congratulations Emelia on your fantastic efforts with your MDP, it has been great to be part of your design journey this year.

Good luck with the submission of your project and adding any finishing touches. We hope that you have learned a lot from being part of this year's UpRising and are excited to take your creativity and design thinking into the next steps in life, (which is exactly what business and industry are looking for.) Teachers, thank you for helping your students make the leap across the gap, from classroom to industry. Business leaders, likewise it has been fantastic to connect with you, thank you for all of the support you have given to these young designers and helping to grow the innovation ecosystem in NSW. Breaking down the silos, together.

If you could complete this quick survey that would be greatly appreciated, teachers and business/community also welcome to fill in and provide valuable feedback.

Thank you.
