Wearables for Women's Safety

post-image
Over half of all women in Australia feel unsafe when alone, especially at night. Through my MDP I aim to create a discrete, wearable, silent alert system to help women feel more secure, working to improve their overall wellbeing. My initial idea is to create a wearable piece of jewellery that can communicate or send a location to an external device, so I’m looking for support in technology and coding.

What do you think?

A great idea Zahli.

Would an alert be sent if the person wearing bushed a button or if their bracelet was broken.  If you can give some more details on how the alarm would be activated, supporter will get a clearer picture of how they help.

What already exists that is on the market, maybe a matter of tapping into some of this technology and modifying to better suit your design brief.

Love the idea. Looking forward to seeing come to life.

unique concept with the necklace. Just a little unsure how large the charm of the necklace will be as the microcontroller as well as the battery would take up a lot of space as well as being heavy. maybe consider a kinetic switch that will allow the microcontroller to be activated very briefly allowing it to be smaller and lighter while still functioning. overall a unique concept, don't give up on it and continue to build on it because it has potential.

Hi Zahli!

I like that the idea is jewellery - I think that this could help destigmatise the discussion of violence against women or fear against speaking out by making a safety device something that is beautiful and fun to wear. I feel like an important consideration is justifying why we would need a wearable when a lot of people use location tracking on their phone - maybe just clarifying that it is for sending alerts when the woman's phone has been stolen or when she feels unsafe to use it.

Zahli- with an ageing population this idea is increasingly important. The best app I have seen that gives your location is called Emergency Plus. It gives location in 3 words. I installed it in my phone after I was walking on the outskirts of a park with a friend and she collapsed. Fortunately she recovered and, if that happens again, I can locate us much more quickly. It would be great if you could design a way to use an app like this in jewellery.

Hi Zahli,

Great idea, I like the versatility of choosing how to wear it, whether it be by earring or by necklace, or maybe some other means. I believe that technology is quickly advancing and I do not think you will struggle to find a small battery and microcontroller that would do the job. Similar arrangements are in place as I'm sure you're aware with duress systems, this being discreet I believe is an important design factor that goes above and beyond the typical duress system.

I think something important to consider is the security of the signal that is sent and how it is sent, whether or not it will be affected by a lack of signal, and how it would send a message, whether through internal systems or through being linked to a phone, which people do not always carry. It would be useful to incorporate a touch or gesture to intitiate a message, however there needs to be precautions in place so as to not accidentally trigger it.

Again, great idea, I hope to see it come to life.

Hi Zahli, I understand the context and root causes of the problem of women feeling unsafe when alone. What specific factors contribute to this feeling of insecurity, and therefore how can your technology effectively address these concerns without creating additional risks or vulnerabilities. I like your primary goal of the alert system and that it’s to enhance the safety and security of women. Hence, the reliability of the technology is vital. How can your design ensure that the device will work effectively in emergency situations? What fail-safes can be built into the design to prevent false alarms or malfunctions? Since the device is intended to be worn as a piece of jewellery, it's crucial to prioritise discreetness and wearability in the design. How can the device be made small, lightweight, and aesthetically pleasing to encourage users to wear it regularly? I recommend seeking partnerships with experts in wearable technology, safety, and coding to ensure the effectiveness and reliability of the alert system. Collaborating with professionals in these fields can help identify innovative solutions and ensure the device meets industry standards. I also think involving the target community of women in the design process to ensure their voices are heard will be important for gaining insights. I think for marketing your product you could reach out to social media influencers to not only help demonstrate how your product works, but also in selling it to your target audience. I believe with seeking out these experts for your design it could be successful.

A great idea Zahli.

A great concept to allow women to look fashionable whilst feeling safe. With current technology advancing it is also a reasonable design concept to have the alert system implemented into a necklace or other jewellery. My only concern would be the overall security of the signal being sent to an external device. The appropriate coding would need to be implemented to insure that hackers or scammers can not find their way into receiving the location of the person wearing the jewellery.

Congratulations Zahli you are nearly there.

If you could update the image on your Post to show a little collage of your projects development that would be fantastic. We will be awarding the top three UpRising design projects for 2024 and the UpRising alliance and community love to see the journey of your design.

There is a little feedback survey, if you could fill it in that would fantastic as it really helps us to understand how we can better help next years design students.

It also has an option for you to select if you would like to continue to be involved in UpRising next year and beyond. Lots of interesting ways to continue to build connections within the design industry. Great for your resume and career paths.

Wishing you all the best with your trials and finishing touches on your MDP.

Shout out if we can help in any way.
