Detachable Mycelium Drumkit

post-image

Millions of drum kits produced yearly end up in landfills, unrecyclable and non-biodegradable. As the materials are difficult to seperate the whole kit ends up in landfill causing environmental destruction. This unsustainable cycle needs to change.

I have designed a mycelium and bamboo drum kit, as a sustainable solution. Designed for disassembly, each component can be individually recycled, ensuring a cradle-to-cradle solution. These eco-friendly materials also reduce costs and benefit the environment, both during manufacturing and at the end of the products life.

A fantastic concept Ben. I had never really considered the scale of the waste created by discarded short term musical interests. So great that you are creating awareness about this.

What are two or three things that you need assistance with?

Also check out the Shop tab in UpRising site for possible places to purchase Mycelium.

Great work

Hey Ben, i'm making the mycelium single use lids, have you started growing anything with mycelium yet, if so hows yours going. Thanks George

These two might be worth reaching out to,..

available in Europe through Grown.bio and in the US via Ecovativedesign.

Great to see you connecting and helping out with another UpRising student project.

Legend!

Hey Alex,

I saw that, it looks sick!

i'm mainly just finalising the design now (I had to redo it like 3 weeks ago so i'm a bit behind).

I was wondering if you wanted to chat about our projects? do you have discord?

My name on discord is: treetrunks_

If not I can just send my whatsapp......... hello?

Ben Ben Ben... you have really outdone yourself with this one, beautiful! Once everything is done, hit me up. My fellow friend and music artist 'Summrs' will happily buy hundreds of these + he will overpay, he is very big on sustainability and the environment.

The focus on sustainability is a good strength here, and using mycelium is an interesting idea. However, the acoustic properties of mycelium aren’t mentioned, which are an important property that would be affected by the change in material. Drum sound is obviously an important factor in drums, and it’s not clear how this material compares to standard drums in terms of how it would affect the sound.

Mycelium may not perform well in humid or wet conditions, which could limit where and how this drum kit could be used. This should be addressed if the design is intended to be a long-term solution, and be usable in various environments.

Overall, it’s a good idea, but more information around performance and environmental conditions would help improve it.

@RobertENEG12007

I'm doing a prototype now on seeing if the mycelium will work with a normal snare drum, If it doesn't i'm going to do a inner bamboo ring so the acoustic is still there.

If it still doesn't work, i'm going to try other creative sustainable materials.

I'm also down to 2 sustainable glosses which should help protect it a little bit
