A fantastic idea Sarah.
As a young person grows from between the ages of 12 to 18, a family often has to purchase three or four complete uniforms, for some schools, thats shorts shirts, socks, blazers, which can be very expensive. Even purchasing second hand can be expensive along with the stigma.
The idea of be8ng able to constantly adjust garments, especially a blazer is a great idea.
What are two things that we can assist you with?
Looking forward to seeing this project develop.
This is really great Sarah! I like the way you think.
I am a 2nd year student, Alanah in ENEG12007-Creative Engineering and found your idea so intuitive; with the rise of fast-fashion and big corporations that pump out more waste than we need, it makes me happy to see a design that tackles an area of fashion that could eventually be expanded into other clothing. I did have some question on how you would integrate the customizing aspect of your designs. For example, for the blazer to be customizable, it would need to be bigger to cater to growing bodies of school-aged children. How would you address the bulkiness of that extra fabric? School children are active and having that extra fabric on them wouldn't be ideal especially during summer. If they were detachable, the quality of the clothing that has gone through multiple cycles through the wash would differ from the attachment that does not get used as much. How can we make sure the detachable parts stay somewhat the same in terms of its quality?
Additionally, from your sketches it wasn't very clear how the customizations on the uniforms would be attached. Are they also through clips, zippers, Velcro or maybe even with detachable iron-on patches?
This is a really solid idea, and I can see it changing the game for sustainability in clothing. Did you know a garbage truck's worth of clothing end up in landfills every second? Your idea can lessen this, and I am excited to see what you come up with!
Hi Sarah,
I love how much you’ve thought about the challenges facing students, and how solutions-focussed you are. Best of luck with your project!
